So purely hypothetical, but my first brand new car was a Mazda 2 and I loved it. I want to get my wife a new car and think that might be a good fit for her, she doesn’t drive much, just wants something small and easy to drive and safe with good gas mileage. So I work at a Mazda dealer and obviously the new skyactiv 2 isn’t coming to the US, and she HATES scions and wants a hatchback. My understanding is that the new Mazda 2 is federalized and EPA certified for sale in the US, since they sell it in Peurto Rico. Can a car be legally imported from Peurto Rico before the 25 year limit, or at least in this case since it’s already federalized? Obviously it’s not really worth it for a subcompact, but just curious what OPPO knows.

Yes, anything sold in Puerto Rico is legal in the US. The 2's lack of availability in the Continental US is simply because Mazda won’t allow dealers on the mainland to order the car. If they wanted to, they could have them start rolling out to dealers next week.

You can certainly buy one in Puerto Rico and ship it to the mainland, without any legal issues from a federal standpoint.

If it’s federalized, it’s legal.

There is no issue with the Mazda2. The only reason why it isn’t done is because importing a vehicle at this low of a price will cost you 20% over its value, plus the time, and hassle for months. Not only that, it’s hard to sell because people are iffy on these kinds of things, you don’t have search engines with a 2017 Mazda2 feature (I don’t think), plus the value of the car plummets as it would normally. So after you spend/finance $25,000 on a mid-spec Mazda2, you would be hard pressed to sell it for $12,000 even if you never opened the doors and smelled the interior. At that point, a CX3 or Mazda3 hatch is a far, far better deal. However, if you can import a clean car for a total of $10,000, you can make that back just due to the novelty of thing and $10,000 being a fairly low amount for most anyone on a car. Maybe we can do an Oppo group pay on a nice 10 year old Puerto Rican van or something!

It’d be a lot easier to buy a Fit.

Yeah it obviously doesn't really make sense financially, I owned a 2015 mazda3 also that was fantastic. But if I hit the powerball or that Nigerian prince finally comes through on our deal, I'm importing one for a runabout.

I'd say buy the scion, and use your Mazda connections to transform it back to a 2. Or get a CX-3 and enjoy the easier ingress/egress.
